Unique places to stay in Drenthe - a hotel with a story

A unique stay, to us, means sleeping somewhere you will not find anywhere else. Bitter en Zoet is housed in the former hospital and service homes of the Colony of Benevolence. No standard rooms, but spaces with history.

A hotel that is not a chain

Until 1980 Veenhuizen was a closed village. Only residents, staff and prisoners could enter. That isolation is why the village survives so completely today, and why it is now UNESCO World Heritage. We are a family business caring for a small part of that heritage.

Every room has its own character

Because we work with existing monumental buildings, no two rooms are the same. The Attic sits under the original beams, the Nurse's Room recalls the women who lived here, and the apartments have their own kitchen and living room. Ask us which room suits you best.

What makes staying here different?

It is the combination: the monument, the landscape around it, a kitchen that follows the seasons and hosts who tell you the story of the place. Walk the village with host Peter or listen to our podcast about the bitter history of Veenhuizen.

Book your unique stay

All rooms and apartments include breakfast. Combine your stay with dinner in our restaurant, or choose a two or three night package and really take your time in Drenthe.

Staying in a monument, not a standard room

The buildings date from 1893 and belonged to the health complex of the Colony of Benevolence. That means high ceilings, original details and rooms that refuse to fit a template.

We restore with respect: comfortable beds and modern bathrooms, while the character of the building leads.

  • The Attic beneath the original roof beams
  • The Nurse's Room, named after the women who lived here
  • Apartments with their own kitchen and living room
  • Every room includes a generous breakfast

A stay with a story
