With this menu we pay culinary tribute to Johannes van den Bosch, the visionary founder of the Colonies of Benevolence whose life story is inextricably linked to his later role as Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. In honour of this historic cross-pollination between Veenhuizen and the East, we chose Indonesian cuisine as the angle for our menu. Let us take you on a culinary journey where authentic, fragrant spices merge with contemporary, local ingredients.
Selamat makan – enjoy your meal
A fluffy omelette with soft tofu, covered in a refined, lightly spicy peanut-ketjap sauce. Topped crispy with fresh bean sprouts, spring onion, celery leaf and golden fried onions.
Wine suggestion: Riesling Feinherb Donatushof - Germany
A velvety, heart-warming corn soup infused with fragrant ginger and fresh lemongrass, finished with creamy coconut milk. A flavoursome ode to Indonesian cuisine, traditionally topped with spring onion and crispy dried onions.
Wine suggestion: Les Favèdes Viognier Réserve - France
A harmonious ode to Indonesian cuisine. Powerful venison rendang, enriched with authentic galangal, served alongside flavoursome nasi kuning and beans in coconut. The dish is perfectly balanced by the fresh acidity of atjar and the refreshing notes of lemon balm.
Wine suggestion: Côtes du Rhône - France
A contemporary, Indonesian-inspired dessert experience of creamy crème, soft banana and rich caramel. Served with a strong, aromatic coffee, letting the flavours melt together harmoniously.
Wine suggestion: PX sherry or 10-year-old tawny port
As an atmospheric finale to this culinary journey, we offer you a delicious cup of coffee on the house, served with an artisanal piece of spekkoek.

The story
Monumental Veenhuizen is inextricably linked to Johannes van den Bosch, who started a daring social experiment here as founder of the Society of Benevolence to fight poverty. As an 'unfree colony' it became a strictly managed farming village where thousands of orphans and beggars were re-educated through structure and labour. This unique history is still palpable everywhere in the monumental avenue landscape, which has since been crowned UNESCO World Heritage.
Why Bitter en Zoet
Our hotel and restaurant occupy the monumental hospital of Veenhuizen - a place that wrote a century of the Dutch story. You sleep among the original walls, corridors and windows of that story, with every comfort of today.
A national monument in the unique colony village of Veenhuizen, UNESCO World Heritage.
