A boutique hotel is defined by atmosphere, personal attention and a strong sense of place. At Bitter en Zoet there are no anonymous corridors or standardised rooms. As a family business, we personally welcome guests to the former hospital and three historic staff residences of Veenhuizen. Their listed character has been preserved while contemporary comfort was added with care.
Sleeping in a listed monument from 1893
Our rooms and apartments are spread across three monumental service houses and the old hospital. Every room is different: tall windows, thick walls, roof beams in the attic. Comfort rooms, larger Deluxe rooms with a bathtub and family apartments with their own kitchen - all including our generous breakfast buffet.
Drenthe on your doorstep
Drenthe is a province of open fields, old forests and quiet villages. Bitter en Zoet is in Veenhuizen, a short cycle from the Fochteloerveen nature reserve, the National Prison Museum and the brook valleys around the Slokkert.
Dining in the same building
After check-in you can leave the car where it is. Our restaurant serves approachable fine dining with organic produce from Drenthe, Groningen and Friesland, beer from the village brewery Maallust and vegetables from our own kitchen garden.
Getting here and parking

Veenhuizen lies between Assen, Norg and Appelscha. From the hotel you can cycle to the Fochteloerveen, the Slokkert brook valley or the forests near Norg within half an hour. The National Prison Museum is a short walk away.
