Restaurant Drenthe - an approachable taste experience

Looking for a restaurant in Drenthe where quality and accessibility go hand in hand? At Bitter & Zoet in Veenhuizen you will taste a unique experience: honest, low-threshold and anchored in the monumental story of the Colony of Benevolence.

Restaurant Drenthe: more than an address

In the heart of UNESCO World Heritage Veenhuizen lies Bitter & Zoet, a restaurant housed in the former 1893 health complex. Here you do not just eat: you dine among the original walls, windows and corridors of a place that wrote the story of the Netherlands for more than a century. That gives every dish an extra dimension.

Approachable enjoyment, outstanding taste

We do not believe in stiff tables or complicated etiquette. With us, the joy of eating comes first. The kitchen is led by head chef Peter, sous chef Jos and chef Lars. Together they create dishes that surprise without showing off: familiar flavours, beautiful products and a generous dose of character.

Local, organic and with a story

Our menu follows the season and the landscape of Drenthe, Groningen and Friesland. We work according to the principles of Dutch Cuisine: vegetables and herbs from our own vegetable garden, cheese from Kaaslust, rye bread from van Dijk, coffee from Beukenhorst and organic eggs from Groningen. Sustainability is not a trend for us, but the most obvious choice.

Lunch, drinks or dinner

Whether you come for a hearty lunch after a walk through Veenhuizen, drinks with friends or an extensive dinner: our restaurant in Drenthe is there for every moment. The atmosphere is informal, the team hospitable and the food lingers - in your mind and on your tongue.
