Maallust Brewery at Bitter en Zoet in Veenhuizen

What we offer

Maallust Brewery

A stone's throw from Bitter en Zoet, you'll find a place where craftsmanship literally bubbles: Brouwerij Maallust. Located in the old grain mill of the Colony, this brewery exudes the robust, industrial atmosphere of yesteryear. Here, beer is brewed with the sobriety and passion that characterize Veenhuizen.

Curious how a real Colony beer is made? Feel free to step inside. The scent of malt greets you as you admire the impressive copper brewing kettles. In this historic setting, you see the brewing process up close; from the pure water to the artisanal end product that soon after sparkles in our glass.

Not only the beer, but also the grounds themselves are more than worth a visit. Maallust is located on a beautifully preserved piece of heritage where robust buildings and old machinery recall the activity of the past. It's the ideal place to wander around and soak up the atmosphere of the Colony.

At Bitter en Zoet, we celebrate the craftsmanship of our neighbors. The beers from Brouwerij Maallust are a staple on our menu, but this year we are serving something very special.

A tribute in the glass: De Toezichter

In honor of the 5-year anniversary of the UNESCO World Heritage status of the Colony of Benevolence, Maallust has brewed an exclusive beer: De Toezichter. This delicious spelt beer is a nod to history; robust, full of character, and with the purity of the Drenthe landscape.

Whether you enjoy it on our terrace or in the lounge, De Toezichter is the way to toast to the history of Veenhuizen.

A piece of World Heritage to take home

Does it make you want more? In our shop at the reception, De Toezichter is also available in bottles. A unique gift for those at home, or simply to enjoy your stay in the Colony a little longer yourself.
