Before the arrival of the Society of Benevolence, this entire area looked like this: wild, wet peatland and heath. Empty, remote, and impassable for those who didn't know their way. The Fochteloërveen is one of the few places where you can still see and feel that.
A walking and cycling path runs over the sand ridge straight through the marshy landscape. From the watchtower on the south side, the view is overwhelming. With a bit of luck, you might spot cranes, which have started breeding here in recent years.
